Our Story

It started on Reddit, not in the shower.

A quiet Thursday morning on r/UKPersonalFinance. Thread after thread of people asking the same thing about their energy bill: what am I paying for?

Nobody was asking how to switch. They wanted someone to explain the bill first.

The gap

The UK has no shortage of comparison sites. Uswitch, MoneySuperMarket, Compare the Market. Millions of visitors a month, and people were still posting on Reddit, confused by their own bills.

So I tried the sites myself. Before showing me anything, they wanted my postcode, my meter type, my payment method and my annual usage in kWh. A number most people have never seen written down. Three minutes in, I’d learned nothing about my bill.

I closed the tab. The tools existed. The step from confused to informed didn’t.

Why they won’t fix it

Comparison sites earn when you switch, not when you understand. The deal at the top of the list is often the one paying the highest commission. The system works exactly as designed. It was never designed for you.

What BillLuma does today

Upload one bill, a PDF or a photo from your phone. BillLuma reads it and tells you in plain English what you’re paying, what each charge means, and whether your usage is normal for a home like yours.

Then it deletes your bill. Nothing stored. Nothing kept.

No account. No forms. No email before you see your result.

The name comes from lumen, the Latin word for light. That’s the whole job: make the confusing bit of paper on your kitchen counter make sense.

What’s coming

Next, tips based on your actual usage rather than generic advice. After that, honest comparison: price, exit fees, how long a switch takes, how a supplier treats its customers. By then you’ll know what you’re switching from, which is the right order to do this in.

Where things stand

BillLuma is built in evenings and weekends. It isn’t finished. Some bills still trip up the parser. Features are still on the way.

But it does one thing properly. It takes a bill that’s been quietly bothering you and tells you the truth about it.

If you’ve looked at yours and felt something’s off but couldn’t say what, this is for you.

BillLuma — Understand first. Switch later.
