How to read your OVO Energy bill — explained simply
OVO Energy became one of the UK's biggest suppliers when it bought SSE's household business in 2020, so millions of former SSE customers are now billed by OVO. OVO bills are clean and app-led, but the 'Plan' wording, the Power Move credits and the separate Charge Anytime EV charges throw a lot of people.
What each part of your OVO Energy bill means
Why your bill says OVO when you signed up with SSE
In January 2020, OVO bought SSE's retail energy business and took on its household customers. If you originally joined SSE, your supply was transferred to OVO automatically — your tariff and meters moved across without you doing anything. That's why long-standing 'SSE' customers now receive bills branded OVO Energy. Your account history carried over, but the branding, app and online account are all OVO's now.
'Plan' instead of 'tariff'
OVO calls its tariffs 'Plans' — so your bill will name something like 'Simpler Energy' (their standard variable rate that tracks the Ofgem price cap) or a fixed Plan with an end date. The Plan name is just OVO's label for your tariff. If your bill shows a fixed Plan, look for the end date: when it finishes you'll roll onto a variable Plan unless you pick a new one.
Power Move credit
Power Move is an OVO reward scheme. If you keep the share of your electricity used during the peak window (typically 4–7pm) below a set threshold, OVO credits your account — customers on the recent trials earned roughly £6–£8 a month. On your bill or in the app this shows up as a credit, not a charge. It's optional and you have to opt in; if you don't see it, you haven't joined.
Charge Anytime (EV) charges shown separately
Charge Anytime is OVO's add-on for electric-vehicle owners. Crucially, your home electricity tariff stays the same — the cheap EV charging is billed separately at its own rate (14p per kWh on the pay-as-you-go option as of April 2026), and there's a monthly subscription fee on the newer plans. So if you have an EV, expect a distinct Charge Anytime line that sits apart from your normal household usage. Don't confuse the EV rate with your home unit rate.
Plan estimate vs your direct debit
OVO shows a projected annual cost for your Plan based on your estimated usage, then divides it across 12 equal direct debit payments. As with every supplier, your fixed monthly direct debit rarely matches what you actually used in any single month — you'll typically run down in summer and draw on credit in winter. Submit regular meter readings (or rely on a working smart meter) so the estimate, and therefore your direct debit, stays accurate.
Common questions OVO Energy customers ask
I was with SSE — why am I now getting bills from OVO Energy?
OVO bought SSE's household energy business in January 2020. All of SSE's domestic customers were transferred to OVO, so your supply, tariff and meters moved across automatically — you didn't need to switch or sign anything. Your bills, app and online account are now OVO-branded. It's the same supply, just under new ownership.
What is Power Move on my OVO bill?
Power Move is an optional OVO reward. If you keep your peak-time electricity use (usually 4–7pm) below a target percentage of your total, OVO pays you credit — around £6–£8 a month on recent trials. It appears as a credit on your account, not a charge. You have to opt in through OVO, and you need a working smart meter so OVO can see your half-hourly usage.
Why is there a separate EV charging rate on my OVO bill?
If you've added Charge Anytime, OVO bills your electric-vehicle charging separately from your normal home electricity. Your household unit rate is unchanged; the EV charging is metered through the Charge Anytime app and billed at its own (lower) rate, with a monthly subscription on the newer plans. That's why you'll see a distinct EV line rather than one combined electricity figure.
My OVO account is in credit — can I get a refund?
Yes. If your OVO account holds a credit balance, you can request it back through the OVO app or online account, usually after submitting an up-to-date meter reading. If you've built up a large credit because your direct debit is set too high, it's worth asking OVO to review the monthly amount at the same time so the credit doesn't keep growing.
